The Experience

Sanctuary Wood Museum Hill 62

Trenches in Hill 62 museum

The Sanctuary Wood Museum Hill 62, near Ypres, is one of the most authentic World War I sites in the region. Unlike many reconstructed locations, it still preserves the original battlefield with its craters, uneven terrain, and trenches.

What makes this place truly unique is that you can walk through the real trenches used by soldiers during the war. This makes the experience incredibly immersive and gives a powerful sense of what life on the front line was like. Combined with its small museum of artifacts and photographs, Sanctuary Wood offers a raw and memorable glimpse into the reality of World War I.

The Ramparts of Ypres

The ramparts of Ypres

Walking along the Ramparts of Ypres is one of the most peaceful ways to experience Ypres. Surrounded by greenery and quiet paths, it feels like a natural escape, yet you are always just steps away from the heart of the city.

As you follow the winding trails, you move between history and nature without even noticing. The old fortifications are still there beneath your feet, but today they are covered in grass, trees, and calm water. It is the perfect place to slow down, and enjoy a simple lunch in nature.

Ypres Cloth Hall

Ypres Cloth Hall & Flanders Fields Museum

The Cloth Hall dominates the main square of Ypres and stands as a powerful symbol of the city’s resilience. Once a thriving center of the medieval cloth trade, it was completely destroyed during World War I and later meticulously rebuilt to its former glory.

Inside, the In Flanders Fields Museum offers a deeply moving experience. Through personal stories, interactive exhibits, and powerful visuals, it brings the human side of the war to life, making history feel personal and unforgettable.

After taking in this history, a visit to a local master chocolatier offers a completely different but equally meaningful Belgian experience. Here, you can learn about the rich history of chocolate in Belgium, from its origins to the craftsmanship behind today’s finest pralines. Tasting handmade chocolate while hearing the stories behind it creates a perfect balance, connecting culture, tradition, and simple enjoyment in the heart of Ypres.

The Last Post

Menin Gate

Every evening in Ypres, beneath the Menin Gate, the Last Post Ceremony takes place. Since 1928, this simple yet powerful ritual has honored the soldiers of the British Empire who fell in World War I and have no known grave.

As the city quiets, buglers play the Last Post, and a deep silence fills the gate. Visitors and locals stand together, reflecting on the names engraved on the walls around them. There is no spectacle, only respect, remembrance, and a shared moment of stillness. Attending the ceremony is a moving experience that captures the true spirit of Ypres, a city that continues to remember its past every single day.

An incredibly moving tour of Ypres that delves deep into the history of World War I. Our guide provided detailed insights into the battles fought here and the immense sacrifices made by soldiers from around the world. Walking through the war cemeteries and visiting the Menin Gate was both somber and powerful, reminding us of the heavy cost of war. Highly recommended for anyone interested in history or wanting to pay their respects to those who fought in the Great War!
